#Humanrightsweek: What future for human rights?
- Universiteit Leiden Kamerlingh Onnes-gebouw - Lorentzzaal (A-144)
Special guest lecture on the occasion of International Human Rights Day.
As usual, the Faculty of Law is hosting a special guest to add lustre to the celebration of International Human Rights Day - Dec. 10. This year we welcome distinguished speaker Michael O’Flaherty, the Director of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) in Vienna. In his long and multifaceted career, O'Flaherty has been a member of the UN Human Rights Committee, among others; taught at the Universities of Nottingham and Galway; worked at the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), both in Geneva and in the field, including in Sierra Leone and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
In his lecture, O'Flaherty will address the many challenges facing human rights - from climate change to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and from the threat of economic recession to the assault on democratic institutions, including the judiciary, the media, and civil society. How should we meet these challenges at a time of widespread skepticism?
