The mother of all sci-fi films returns today to Het Kijkhuis! Metropolis shows us how people back in 1927 thought the future would be like. Nearly 100 years later, we're going to examine just how much of that image has become a reality.

Metropolis was one of the first science fiction films and premiered on January 10, 1927. Almost 100 years later, the film will be shown once again in Het Kijkhuis. The film paints a picture of the future as it was imagined back in 1927. Is there any truth to be found in their imagination? Just how accurate was their crystal ball?

The architectural futurism of director Fritz Lang certainly left its mark on countless Hollywood blockbusters. Take, for example, the futuristic Los Angeles of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982). The same goes for Gotham City from Tim Burton's Batman (1989) and many other sci-fi films. Although Metropolis initially flopped, the film has grown into an absolute cult hit since the 1960s. In fact, it's the first film that UNESCO added to the World Heritage List.
