Leiden students and teachers from various programmes will present a year's worth of research on 'Journalism in Leiden: then, now and later' on the day.

Welcome to PRESS: the Day of Leiden Journalism.

On the 3rd of November, Leiden students and lecturers from various study programmes will present a year's worth of research into 'Journalism in Leiden: then, now and later'. Together they will write the building blocks for a new history of Leiden media: from city announcer to city broadcaster. Stories will be told about one of the oldest newspapers in the world, the Leydsche Courant, (1688-1992) and about the world-famous Gazette de Leyde but also about today's Leiden media landscape and its future. Where and how were and are newspapers made? Who wrote and write, read and read the news in this City of Knowledge? Who were those journalists and who was the first female journalist from Leiden? From which Leiden buildings and streets did they operate? What did and do local media contribute to democracy? Does Leiden journalism have a future?

All stories will come together on 3 November 2022, the Day of Leiden Journalism.  Here's what to expect:

  • Public symposium
  • You will receive a special newspaper, the Gazet van Leiden.
  • Journalism city walk
  • Debate with Leiden's chief editors on the future of Leiden Journalism
  • Special P.J. Blok lecture in the evening

Location and times will be announced later.
