Ghettos, graffiti, and gangsters. 'Urban' literally means a city environment. Figuratively, however, the word is often used to refer to street culture. Music genres, fashion trends, slang, and dialect: many things can be considered urban. However, in the US, the term has evolved more and more to refer to something non-white and is often used to refer to Black and Hispanic people — regardless of whether they actually come from an urban area or follow street culture. Understandably, this is often not appreciated by people from these identity groups. Language is sometimes more than what it seems.
