From psychedelics to your vegetarian burger: mushrooms are hot and happening. The fungi are a peculiar phenomenon. Some may become part of meat substitutes, soup or pasta sauce, and others will give you a tummy ache, or hallucinations, or will make you kick the bucket. That’s why it’s very important to know exactly what mushroom you’re holding before you put it in your mouth. In the US, over 700 people a year end up taking a trip to the ER because of poisonous mushrooms.
