st. juttemis
SINT JUTTEMIS/SAINT GLINGLIN
This saint won’t bring you presents like Saint Nicholas and you won’t see anyone carolling in their honour. “Saint Juttemis” does not exist. He (or she?) is a fictitious saint and a fictitious holiday that Dutch people refer to when they mean that something will never happen. Sometimes the saint is referred to as Saint Glinglin in English (based on the French version of the same fake saint). “It will happen when it’s Saint Juttemis.”, means something will happen when hell freezes over or when the cows come home: never. And the Dutch aren’t the only ones with this fake saint. Many other languages including Polish, Italian, Romanian and Portuguese have the same made-up holy person.
